Manchester United were already crowned league champions before the game and Villa had achieved an unbeaten run of eight games at the end of the season to keep them safe from relegation which at one time looked a certainty. The two other West Midland sides Wolves and Birmingham City were relegated. Leeds United had just missed out on the league title but still have a chance of winning the F.A. Cup next week when they face Liverpool at Wembley.

That same evening - April 28th 1965 -
two special matches took place to mark the retirement of Sir
Stanley Matthews at the Victoria Ground, Stoke. The great names of the soccer world who took part are all listed below.

Leeds United having lost the league title on goal average after finishing level on points with Manchester United were beaten again at Wembley in their quest for the F.A. Cup. There was no score after ninety minutes but three goals came in extra time with Ian St. John scoring the winner for Liverpool. A sad ending for Leeds after such a brilliant season following their promotion from the Second Division.
