1961-62 - Part three (Walsall begin to lose ground)

Posted by Tony Hutton

After their win over Newcastle United Walsall were brought down to earth again in their next match at home to Leyton Orient. Fortunately I missed this game when the Saddlers were trounced 5-1.
Here are the brief details of the match on 2nd September as recorded by the 'Sports Argus.

The following week, Saturday 9th September, Walsall bounced back to winning ways with a 3-2 away win over Preston North End at Deepdale. Again here is the Sports Argos summary.

I was back on the Fellows Park terracing for the next game and another narrow victory over Plymouth Argyle.

Yet another goal for Walsall's goal scoring legend Tony Richards.

The win against Plymouth seemed to have revitalised the supporters and the following Tuesday night saw a crowd of 18,869 turn up for the home game with Southampton. Unfortunately the yo-yo effect continued and the Saddlers went down 2-0. It was beginning to sink in that Walsall would not be able to produce another miracle and finish near the top of the league. This attendance was never bettered during the rest of the season.

Things went from bad to worse the following Saturday when Walsall travelled to Leeds Road to face Huddersfield Town.
