1960-61 - Part three (Christmas 1960)

RE-INTRODUCTION TO MY FOOTBALL BLOG  (Blog Design by Sam Hutton)

To readers new and old just to reintroduce myself and the history of this blog, it is recommended that you read my very first blog 'In the beginning' dated February, 2015. This explains my football watching history between 1946 and 1980. After my summer recess (watching and blogging about cricket) I am restarting around Christmas 1960 while still living in the West Midlands. Most of the reports and pictures of the time are from the Midland's sports papers, the Sporting Star of Wolverhampton and the Sports Argus and Sports Mail of Birmingham.

For the remainder of the the 1960-61 season and for much of 1961-62 I will be concentrating very much on Walsall Football Club during the most successful period in their history, after years in the basement of the Football League. I then return to some of the other Midland teams, particularly West Bromwich Albion and Wolves. After that I follow Derby County and Matlock Town to glory before moving to Sheffield and following both of the City's teams. The story ends back where it started in Leeds during the late 1970s.

Walsall had warmed up for this important game with league leaders Bury with a fine 6-2 thrashing of Staffordshire rivals Port Vale last Saturday. The goal scoring hero was yet again Tony Richards with four goals but the man involved in many of the goals was Tommy Wilson, whose partnership up front with Richards is really taking off.
